Why do we listen to and watch sad songs and sad films when we break up?

Whenever I hear a sad or love song I think of my Ex, and the other day I watched the Notebook and cried!! lol, what's wrong with me? I mean surely there would be more value in listening and watching happy films?

  1. wallowing in self pity, its ok for a time, but after a while you realise that its better to listen to something happy
  2. i reckon its to make you happy to see other ppl in the movies get together and make you feel better
  3. becuse its nice to know that other people feel pain too.
  4. So you don't feel like you are the only one that feels like you do at the time. If you can find one that the characters are having a worse time than you, it can actually make you feel better
  5. We don't want to feel that our situation is the only one that has ever happened. Also, we can't move on from our break-up until all of the emotional stages of grief have been experienced and processed. And we can't process emotion until we feel it, and I mean REALLY feel it. It's like sticking our fingers into our throat when we feel queasy. Sure, we'll throw it up eventually, but why wait? The sooner it comes up, the sooner we start feeling better.
  6. People seek for similar situations they are having. We look for things/people, anything to relate to for guidance, and reassurance. I like to think that I examine how other people handle the same/similar life experiences that have been troubling me. Hope this helps.
  7. Misery loves company
  8. its probably coz you might wanna see how the other people react to it or how did they handle the situation.. nothing wrong with u..whenever anyone is sad they watch and hear sad movies and songs coz they don't feel like doing anything fun or enjoying
  9. I think it's self pity. You feel bad for yourself and you want to watch movies where the characters go through sad moments just like you.
  10. we do that because we want someone or something to relate to. it gets us emotional in songs and movies because it's a relatable experience. it's natural, it healthy. (i cried and thought about my ex during the notebook too :)
  11. because were sad and we dont want to know that the whole world is feeling better then you so we watch sad movies and lissen to sad music as it helps us to fink that life is ok lol
  12. "We"? You and the mouse in your pocket? I don't do that, never did.
  13. because it is good for the mind to grieve. Sad stuff supports our grief process. Hopefully after the grieving we start to look for the positives. those who do not recover so quickly usually suffer from depression. but its only natural to be sad, it usually makes us happier in the long run. If you don't support your sadness by watching the movies then you are in denial and this is not good for your mental well-being.
